Family Paddle and Kayak Race Will Benefit Peninsula Family YMCA

Gardena, CA, Summer 2001 - Sponsored by Cobra Kayaks, the second annual San Diego Around The Bay USA 2001 event will be held on September 29, 2001 at Santa Clara Point on Mission Bay in San Diego. All ages and abilities, from children to old-timers, are invited to participate. The 5-mile long race is being hosted by the San Diego Sailing/Kayak Center (retailer, rental operator and paddling school). The goal is to promote family fun, increase awareness of kayaking and raise assistance funds to ensure that all community children and families can take advantage of YMCA programs.
The Around The Bay is a sister event to the five and twenty mile discipline Bay2Bay, just held in June for the eighteenth year. The shorter race courses in the Around the Bay are meant to encourage more beginners and families to participate and yet offer a venue for those paddlers who want to try their hand at competition. "Cobra is a strong supporter of events that encourage grass roots participation," stated Warren Aitken, president of Cobra Kayaks. "We're committed to the growth of kayaking and believe that these types of for-fun-only promotions will show how easy paddling is and yet be challenging for those who wish to take the sport to a competitive level. At the same time we can help community programs such as the local YMCA."
Competitors will receive an event T-shirt when they check in starting at 8:00 am at the Mission Bay San Diego Sailing/Kayak Center. Entrants can bring their own kayaks or rent one at a discounted rate through the Center. Registration fees are $20 for adults, $10 for ages seventeen and under and $10 for ages thirteen and under. Post race festivities will include free kayak lessons, prize drawings, silent auction, live-band music and food and beverage vendors.
